Kwame Nkrumah left the UGCC and formed the CPP in 1949, demanding self-government sooner. Positive Action brought strikes, protest and arrests. Election victories then transferred growing responsibility to African ministers until the Gold Coast and its associated territories became Ghana in 1957.
